February – what a month. The effects of the crassusin were definitely starting to show now. The month of January, with the appetite increaser added to the cafeteria’s already fatty foods, wreaked havoc on more than a few beltlines.

School resumed after an uneventful winter break, and initially, the first day back seemed normal. No one looked different (well, maybe less toned in some cases), and classes went on like nothing had ever happened. But slowly, the changes that came with the Announcement were coming into place.
The first thing we noticed was that teachers were offering candy as a reward for a correct answer in class. Nothing too unusual, but the frequency of candy-giving was much higher now. In current events, while the news mainly focused on the Middle East, a small portion was dedicated to various upstart protestors against the Announcement. The new

It was now December, and snow coated the city. The temperatures were now averaging well below freezing, and my group of friends and I had to relocate from our outside meeting point to the newly opened coffee shop across the street from the school. Even if the weather was nice, we’d probably had moved anyways. All sense of entertainment was gone – no one came out to practice at any point since the first week of November. The two remaining cross-country runners had thrown in the towel. The football team had been long since disbanded, leaving the players with nothing more to do. It was now early November, and the school cafeteria sold exclusively junk food. The greasiest pizzas and burgers you’ve ever seen, a smorgasbord of deep fried foods, entire cakes as a serving, and 2-litre sodas were all suddenly on offer, and there wasn’t a vegetable in sight. But nobody was noticeably fatter. A few kids had started pigging out in order to practice meeting the looming calorie requirements, but modesty and decency remained as they wore baggy clothes. You couldn’t tell if anyone was getting fatter.

Senior year of high school is a time of both stress and relief, each presenting themselves in different ways. I was on the side of relief, however, because since I had studied my butt off for three years, I had a shortened schedule. Me and my friends religiously did every Honors and AP class from Freshman-Junior years and were going to reap our reward of relaxation this year.
